Although there is no shortage of children’s books for tablets and eReaders, the Spy Sam series for iPad is unique in its approach. With features designed to help kids ages 6 to 8 — including those with dyslexia — improve their reading skills, this is an app parents will want to download.

The app features simple text with a limited number of words per page. However, the exciting, spy-themed plot keeps boredom at bay and is perfect for young readers who love adventure stories. The series revolves around Spy Sam and his friends Jess, a fast-flying spy jet, and Fizz, who creates all of Sam’s high-tech spy gadgets.

The Spy Sam books, from developer Matthew Cordingly, feature phonics clues and an easy-to-decipher font. Plus, the pale blue background is ideal for those with dyslexia, since a bright white background can make reading more difficult for dyslexic children due to the distracting glare.

Although the books include interactive features, these elements revolve around the words themselves and enhance understanding of the story. Spy Sam encourages kids to read along with their parents rather than rely on audio narration within the app.

The series consists of three books so far, and a fourth book is scheduled to be released in 2015. The first book of the Spy Sam series is free to download, and books 2 and 3 cost $1.99 each. Spy Sam fans can also visit the developer’s website for confidence-building printable certificates and coloring pages.

Spy Sam is available from iTunes and requires iOS 7.0 or higher.
