Shawn Wickard spent the last 16 years paralyzed from the waist down, due to lupus and spinal disease. More than nine years ago, he was the first person to receive a stem cell transplant at the National Institutes of Health. He then received physical therapy to help him learn how to stand and walk again. He showed his ability to do just that when he threw the first pitch at a Bees game in Salt Lake City last month.
"I want more people to understand that modern medicine is curing and helping people and I'm just one of the examples of how well that medicine is working," Wickard told Good4Utah.com.
