PRIORI is an app that helps alert bipolar patients when their mood levels are changing. Developed by the University of Michigan, the app runs in the background to listen in on incoming and outgoing phone calls to analyze changes in speech patterns.

If the app notices a change that might signal either manic or depressive states, the patient and his or her care team are alerted. PRIORI ensures to respect the privacy of users by encrypting call recordings and using only reports to inform on pending issues.

According to Gizmag, the more the app is used, the more successful it becomes at reading changes. A baseline is set for each user, and weekly check-in calls are partially used to match speech patterns with the patient's reported mood.

Researchers are hoping PRIORI will also be used to mark changes in speech patterns for Parkinson's and schizophrenia patients.
